I was trained as a radiation oncologist as well as a medical oncologist in China. I received an MPhil in Molecular Oncology in 2003 and a PhD in Cancer Epidemiology in 2009, both from the Chinese University of Hong Kong. I completed a postdoctoral fellowship at Vanderbilt University and a tenure-track research fellowship at NCI/NIH.In my opinion, the key for finding targets for personalized cancer prevention and treatment is starting from defining clean phenotypes and then identifying distinct genotypes inside a clean phenotype. Translational Epidemiology methods can first enable us to defining clean phenotype according to their patterns of risk factors. We then can investigate how the genotype–phenotype relationships are complicated by gene–gene,
gene–environment and environment–environment interactions. As a result, we can address the significant heterogeneity in cancer etiology, treatment, and prognosis.
Therefore, my unique cross-training and my original yet matured perspectives on the translational epidemiology as mentioned above demonstrate my exceptional ability and tremendous potentials to effectively work in the domain of “Next Generation” Cancer Epidemiology, and to be a productive and promising researcher in Translational Cancer Research.
