Here in the sensitive instrument facility of Ames Laboratory, I am in charge of two transmission electron microscopes (FEI Tecnai F20 and FEI Titan Themis). My job includes: 1) Addressing materials processing requests from users. The materials are various, including bulk metal alloys, ceramics, magnetic materials, nanomaterials, 2D materials, etc. Depending on the users' demands, a variety of techniques are used, including conventional bright/dark-field imaging, selected area electron diffraction, high-resolution imaging, (aberration-corrected) STEM imaging, EDS, EELS, tomography, Lorentz microscopy, etc. Multiple sample preparation methods are used according to the samples, including mechanical polishing, ion milling, and FIB. 2) Performing regular maintenance of the microscopes, such as alignment, trouble-shooting, corrector tuning, etc. 3) Training new users for the microscopes.
