Se exponen algunos antecedentes en relaci車n con el surgimiento de la Endocrinolog赤a como ciencia y se describen las caracter赤sticas y s赤ntomas m芍s visibles del bocio exoft芍lmico como enfermedad endocrina. Se indican los a os de aparici車n de las referencias bibliogr芍ficas m芍s antiguas conocidas a nivel universal acerca de esta afecci車n y del primer trabajo publicado en Cuba en relaci車n con un padecimiento de las gl芍ndulas endocrinas. Se hace un breve comentario respecto a un comunicado presentado en 1863 en la Academia de Ciencias M谷dicas, F赤sicas y Naturales de La Habana por el doctor Carlos J. Finlay y Barr谷s, el cual tiene la doble significaci車n de haber sido el primer trabajo cient赤fico publicado por el sabio cubano y el primer art赤culo sobre bocio exoft芍lmico que vio la luz en una revista cient赤fica editada en la isla. Some antecedents related to the arising of endocrinology as a science are exposed. The main features and symptoms of exophtalmic goiter as an endocrinological disease are decribed. The years of appearance of the oldest bibliographic references known all over the world on this disease were also indicated as well as the first research published in Cuba related to this condition of endocrinological glands. A brief comment on a communication presented in 1863 at the Academy of Physical, Natural and Medical Sciences of Havana by the doctor Carlos J. Finlay was provided. This communication had the strong significance of being the first scientific research published by the Cuban wise and the first article on exophtalmic goiter published in a scientific journal edited in the island.
