some biographic data are offered about the sevillan physician l芍zaro de flores navarro (162?-1673), author of the first scientific book written in cuba, and the most eminent of the spanish doctors who worked in the island during the so-called hispanic period. the formal characteristics are described and a brief analysis of the content of this work entitled the art of sailing, which was written in havana between 1663 and 1772, and published in madrid one year later, is made. it is considered a very rare and valuable document, due to its significance for the history of universal nautics, as well as for the cuban science and culture.
