the objective of this work was to analyze the efficiency of the poultry sector in the chicken fattening phase. this was carried out using the application of data envelopment analysis (dea) proposed by charnes et al. (1978) and banker et al. (1984), the malmquist index (caves; christensen and diewert, 1982) and their decomposition proposed by fˋre et al. (1994), simar and wilson (1998) and zofio and novell (1998). the data corresponding to two periods of five associated farms to one of the most important zulia state (venezuela) integrated poultry farms were taken. the results pointed out that one of the farms stood out as the most efficient during the two periods studied and that the majority of the farms increased their efficiency from one period to another, due mainly to approaching the optimum production scale level and for the technological progress. the use of these tools reveals their use for evaluating the efficiency of this sector, still more useful if the causes of the inefficiencies are analyzed and the corrective measures are taken in time.
