This paper points out the important functions of powder metallurgy(PM)in materials fabrication and parts manufacturing.The world is facing resource depletion,energy shortage and ecological deterioration,PM as an advanced green manufacturing technique takes up a more significant status nowadays because it is a high efficient,energy and materials saving technique that can integrate materials fabrication and parts manufacturing together; it is a near-net-shape forming technique with little(no)pollution.The present state of PM industry in Aria,Europe,North America and the new development directions and emphasis of the foreign PM industry before 2020 were introduced.Based on the author's research experience in PM,the current situation and weakness of domestic PM development were analyzed;the overall development goals and thinking of domestic PM industry before 2020 were preliminary discussed.Facing the industrial structure adjustment and upgrade in the next few years, opportunities and challenges coexist,PM industry of our country should grasp the world's new development trend and to establish a comprehensive advanced PM industrial system of our country;strive to develop novel PM materials,new PM technology and techniques; to establish and perfect the seriation specialization and standardization of products; to promote and expand the applications of PM products in automobile,machinery,military and aerospace industries etc.and to accelerate the realization of the transition of our country from PM big country to PM great power.
