The ground motion period, one of the three important characteristics of ground motion, has a great influence on the earthquake damage. The current earthquake early warning (EEW)system is not yet able to estimate the ground shaking period rapidly and effectively, which makes it impossible to predict earthquake damage using the ground motion period. Therefore, a method for ground motion period estimation based on early warning parameters of initial seismic wave is proposed. A large number of borehole strong motion records from KiK-net are used to analyse the linear distribution, correlation coefficient and error standard deviation of three typical early warning parameters and four typical seismic cycle parameters. The results show that the maximum predominant period (τpmax )is highly correlated with the weighted average period of response spectrum (Tavg)and the average period of Fourier amplitude spectrum (Tm), respectively. The empirical formulas based on τpmax can continuously estimate Tavg and Tm with the increasing of initial seismic wave. In EEW system, the ground motion period estimated by τpmax is vital importance to improve the seismic damage prediction. ? 2022 Science Press.
