  Y-Zr(OH)4 gel was prepared using ZrOCl2·8H2O and YCl3·6H2O as raw materials by co-precipitation.To obtain the mixed slurry,nano-scale alumina powder was added into the Y-Zr(OH)4 gel.The Y-Zr(OH)4 gel/alumina composite powders with high degree of sphericity and good fluidity were prepared by spray granulation.The ZTA green bodies with relative density of 47.4% were obtained after calcination at 800 ℃ and followed by cold isostatic pressing.The relative densities higher than 96% are achieved for the ZTA samples sintered at 1550 ℃, 1600 ℃ and 1650 ℃.The microstructure analysis indicates that the smaller zirconia grains are homogenously dispersed in the alumina matrix.The bending strength, fracture toughness, and Vickers hardness of the ZTA samples sintered at 1600 ℃ are 716 Mpa, 8.1 Mpa·m1/2, and 18.0 Gpa, respectively.
