摘要

in this work, compliance with venezuelan labeling regulations for food products was evaluated from 22 samples of 13 micro, small and medium food industries located in three municipalities of merida state. with the selected industries the authors tried to cover the main areas that make up the food sector of the region. 22 samples of processed fruits and vegetables, cereals, chocolate and milk products were studied. the results showed that any sample complied 100% with the last labeling regulation (official bulleting no. 37.139, 2007); however, 79% of the samples showed the name and the quality of the product on their labels. only 7.7% had a sanitary registration, an essential document for product commercialization in the country. these findings reveal that training about the importance of correct labeling is crucial to warrant the faithfulness of the commercial transaction and to guide the consumer about the quality of the products they are purchasing. the nutritional information, not compulsory in venezuela, may add to the value of the product and to motivate the nutritional culture of the people. appropriate food labeling may help to maintain the prevalence of small food businesses which is of great importance for the region.
