摘要

globalization pushes rural agribusiness towards ever higher competitiveness. consequently, latin america has seen the emergence of rural agribusinesses in areas where they make up local food production systems, i.e. special types of production systems and clusters. our paper explores such systemsˋ ability to put available resources to work in order to sharpen their businessesˋ competitive edge. the resources involved in our case study include the local territory, i.e. the grazelands and tourist attractions, segments of local stakeholders, and the typical mantecoso cheese -a symbol of local identity-, to mention but a few. an additional local resource, however, can be found in mantecoso cheese quality, if initiatives from local stakeholders and the milk producersˋ associaton, combined with the creation of a collective trademark, are successful. still, the simultaneous presence of several disparate groups of players, and the complex web of vertical and horizontal relations among them, strongly favor a coordinated approach before a ˋquality pactˋ can be reached as the key to market success.
