<正>I-tsing (義净,635-713),whose lay surname was Chang (張) and whose personal name Wen-ming (文明),was born in Shan-chuang (山莊) of Ch’i-chou(齊州,the region of modern Chi-nan 濟南,Shantung)in the T’ang dynasty.At the seventh year of his age,he got a chance to wait upon Shan-yu (善遇) and Hui-chih (慧智),two learned masters of the T’u-k’u Monastery (土窟寺) of the Western Village of his native prefecture.
