La defensa y consolidaci車n de las fronteras en el Septentri車n novohispano: Geograf赤a y desarrollos cartogr芍ficos (1759-1788)

This paper deals with the situation along the Northern boundary of New Spain under Charles III, focusing on the features referred to its exploration, defence and consolidation. Cartography developments of that period are considered especially important and therefore we study the most meaningful maps related to that territory, and at the same time we use sources from archives and bibliography in a complementary way. On that basis we reason about the boundary strengthening, the restraint of the apaches and the significance of the produced cartography, which made possible the updating of geographical knowledge. Planteamos en este trabajo la situaci車n de la frontera septentrional en Nueva Espa a durante el reinado de Carlos III, centr芍ndonos en los aspectos relativos a su exploraci車n, defensa y consolidaci車n. Concedemos prioridad a los desarrollos cartogr芍ficos de la 谷poca, por lo que analizamos los mapas m芍s significativos sobre ese territorio 〞si bien utilizamos de forma complementaria fuentes de archivo y bibliogr芍ficas-, argumentando as赤 sobre el fortalecimiento de la frontera, la contenci車n de los apaches y el valor de la cartograf赤a generada, al posibilitar la actualizaci車n de los conocimientos geogr芍ficos.
