The value and approaches of Chinese herbal medicine R& D against broad-spectrum respiratory virus [广谱抗呼吸道病毒中药研发的价值与途径]

Respiratory viruses including SARS-COV-2 have posed great threats to world public health and human life safety. Respiratory viruses are easy to infect, mutate, spread across species, which were challenges for traditional antiviral drugs and research and development of vaccine. It is imperative to develop broad-spectrum antiviral drugs that are safe and effective. Traditional Chinese medicines are characteristic of multi-component, multi-target and multi-pathway, making them have great advantages and potential in the development of new drugs against respiratory viruses. Based on the analysis on the current research and development status of broad-spectrum antiviral drugs, this paper summarizes the traditional Chinese medicines regarding their unique values in treatment of multiple viral infections, their responses to virus mutation and drug resistance, immune regulation and overall treatment. We also discuss the approaches of Chinese herbal medicine R& D against broad-spectrum respiratory viruses, including exploring the common targets, expanding certain kind of virus targets, targets convergence and optimization, the big data-based core pathogenesis screening, which provide new strategies for research and development of such traditional Chinese medicine and dealing with respiratory virus infection.
