Copper plays a multifaceted role in the natural-social water cycle. On one hand,it exhibits various valence states and engages in diverse redox reactions,encompassing crucial functionalities such as diagenetic mineralization,catalytic oxidation,and cell respiration. It plays a particularly vital regulatory role in the energy intake,nutrient conversion,and organic synthesis in the metabolism of organisms. On the other hand,as a subgroup element,it can act as a pivotal ligand,forming chelates with biological elements,becoming an essential nutritional element in living organisms. Simultaneously,it also acts as a heavy metal element that inhibits biological activity. The transformation of copper's function depends on its abundance,valence state,and form,which in turn affects the energy flow,nutrient flow,material flow,and economic flow of the ecosystem. Therefore,future studies should focus on understanding the occurrence forms and background changes of copper in the Anthropocene era,improving the utilization of various forms of copper,unleashing its economic and ecological potential,and eliminating its interference with the normal activities of the ecosystem. We recognize that the behavior of the element cycle helps to reveal the vulnerability and sustainability of water ecosystems,and plays an important role as a probe for environmental management and conservation of water ecology. ? 2023 Science Press.
